Biography
Joined Second Life on January 27, 2007. During the familiarisation period, Magellan Egoyan experimented with "porting" some of his real life sculptures into Second Life. However, he quickly became fascinated with art that is unique to Second Life - kinetic and reactive sculptures, sculptures that incorporate sound, and installations that incorporate elements of the landscape. He developed some kinetic sculptures that have been shown at the Virtual Artist Alliance gallery in Chiaksan. His early encounters included elros tuominen, Pandora Wake, Cyanide Seelowe and Rezago Kokorin. The generosity of these individuals among many others led him to a commitment to promoting the unique art work found within Second Life to a broader audience.
In April 2007, Magellan Egoyan discovered the possibilities offered by machinima and began developing a series of machinima clips focused on art carried out within Second Life. He launched as series called "Second Life Artist". In an attempt to improve reception of these clips, after examining the world of youTube clips, he decided to develop a second series of clips that are more information-driven. Drawing on his real life expertise in geographic information, he developed a second machinima series called "Second Life Geography". The first of these clips became an overnight sensation and increased viewership of the art-related clips dramatically, an example of a "halo effect" in action.
In real life a prominent Canadian scientist (Dr. Geoffrey Edwards), Magellan Egoyan began to find ways to cross-pollinate the work going on in real life with his burgeoning activities within Second Life. While taking part in an online forum of scientists interested in Second Life, he initiated and has coordinated ever since the activities a group of scientists that became the "Embodied Research Group (ERG)". The ERG now has its own blog site as well as a weekly meeting schedule inworld. A second initiative involves the development of "mixed reality installations" that combine Second Life art and practice with real world elements and audiences. A first mixed reality installation called Leaves of Light / Enclume was launched in September 2007, and a second, much more ambitious installation is currently under development in collaboration with the City Museum of Düsseldorf, Germany.
